Dr. William Perry: Dr. J. B. Kneece operated the Square Deal Drug Store until his death. Dr. Kneece died while attending Sunday School at the Baptist Church. Dr. J. B. Rivers operated the store after Dr. Kneece died. James McRae was a long-time employee of the drug store.
Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Thomas Sumner worked here either for Dr. Kneece or Ellison and Ruth Williams. Dr. D. T. Teal was an early owner, and according to his grandson, John Frank McLeod, Jr., it was Dr. Teal who gave it the name of Square Deal Drug. He also designed the emblem that signified "a square deal the world over". In the early and middle parts of the century, telephone numbers were very short. Square Deal Drug Store's number was 1! I can still hear J. B. Rivers answering the phone with the words "Number 1"! |
