Wade Hursey House Site

Carolina Bank
Dr. William Perry: A spring was located on this site and the runoff from the spring went through the Craig property. The Craig family later gave the town the property now known as Craig Park. The Wade Hursey house was located right on the street. The house was later moved to the rear of the property and Mr. Gary and "Miss" Fan Adams lived in the house, but it was never as satisfactory as at the original site on the street. The Hursey children were Rudolph, Frances, Helen, and Kenneth. I recall climbing the pecan trees with Kenneth, who was my age. The house had the best sliding banisters I ever recall. Kenneth and I spent many hours sliding down these stairs. I recall that Clarence Catoe lived in the house before it was torn down. The Hurseys rented rooms, and Lib Maynard Rivers was rooming here and teaching school when she and Calvin Rivers got married.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: The Hursey House is gone today, but it was located here and later was moved to the rear of the property. Jimmy Redfearn’s family lived here when he was a child.

Katherine Ward Rivers Braswell: Mrs. Allie Hursey ran a boarding house where most of the teachers took their meals and where some of them lived. My mother was one of the teachers who ate there, and she had some interesting stories to tell about the people who ate there.

James W. Jenkins: I recall a story Mr. Rudolph Hursey told about his dad, Mr. Wade Hursey. Mr. Wade was sick and confined to bed, and one of his wife’s friends came by to check on his health. Mrs Hursey called out to the bedroom, “Wade, you have company, are you decent?” He replied, “Wait till I pull up the cover.” In those days, most everyone wore a nightgown, both men and women, and Mr. Wade thinking he had grabbed the bed cover, had grabbed the bottom of his nightgown and pulled it up to his neck, leaving himself exposed to the elements. Needless to say, the lady guest found out more than she wanted to about Mr. Wade’s condition, while his wife was mortified, and Rudolph got a good story to tell.
