Dr. William Perry:
I considered buying this entire location (it was for sale for $55,000) but decided against it. I think that is what the County paid for the property. The Craig House was moved to its present location but was rotated 45 degrees counter-clockwise from the original direction which the house had faced all the years it was on Main Street. This occurred while I was away, and upon my return, I insisted that the house face the same direction it had occupied over the years. It was meant for the house to be visible from the Courthouse, but the Department of Social Services and the Health Department were located in front of the Craig House.
James W. Jenkins: Local county government includes a number of elected and appointed officials who are housed at the Courthouse. Those elected county officials include the following: Clerk of Court, Probate Judge, Sheriff, Treasurer, and Auditor. (Click on the officials link and that will take you to the page to access the history of those who have served in that capacity.) Appointed county officials who are housed in the Courthouse are Tax Assessor and County Administrator. In addition to the elected and appointed county officials, the SC. Probation and Parole officers and staff of Family Court maintain offices here. Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: At this site stood the residence of William D. Craig, a former mayor of Chesterfield. I remember the concrete molding that edged the front yard. Children walking home from school found it challenging to walk on it and carry an armload of books at the same time. When I was growing up, Miss Cora Craig and Mrs. Madge Craig Curtis lived here. They attended St. Paul Methodist Church, and "Miss" Madge taught Sunday School to very young children. When our son Craig was born, "Miss" Madge, then in her late 70's, drove her little blue Ford Falcon to the jewelry store in Cheraw to get a teaspoon in my silver pattern that she had engraved with Craig's name. She said she wanted us to know how honored she was to have him named for the Craig family. "Miss" Madge and Miss Cora had a sister, Mary Craig Hunley, who taught me math in the 8th and 9th grades. |
