Teal Chrysler Dealership
Stephenson Hardware

Eugene Stephenson: This building was built around 1914 by Mr. Will Porter who had a livery stable at the back of the property. The building has served as a grocery store. A Mr. White’s son-in-law operated the grocery store. The Post Office was located here in 1923; Parnell Meehan was Postmaster. The Teals from Zoar operated a Chrysler dealership at this location. I opened Stephenson Hardware on September 1, 1938. I had previously worked for Buck Branch at his hardware which was located where Savannah’s is today. My father came to Chesterfield in 1922, and we lived beside the H. W. Pusser home (later Ted Pusser's house and today Rouse Pusser’s house). We moved to the house beside Jimmy Redfearn’s office about a year later. I recall that there were three wells located in the center of the street-one in front of the jail; one about where Douglas Mill Tax Service is today; and one near the intersection of Main and Page Streets. I do not recall the three buildings adjoining this building that burned. That must have happened around 1915 to 1920. The best I can recall the FCX building next door was constructed in the mid 50’s.

Dr. William Perry: Luther and Gene Teal were farmers who also operated a cotton gin, and they had a Chrysler dealership in this building.
