Dr. William Perry: Hugh and Louise Gaddy built this building. Louise’s mother, Gertrude Meehan Rivers, was Parnell Meehan’s sister as was the grandmother of Bob Coble, Mayor of Columbia. His grandmother was Mary Meehan Davis, and his mother was Margaret Davis Coble.
Katherine Ward Rivers Braswell: Bob Coble’s mother was Margaret Davis Coble. She was Louise Gaddy’s first cousin on the Meehan side. Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: The Dainty Lady Beauty Shop was at this location. Mary Davis Hammond (later Brown) owned the shop, and Sue Lee King Davis (later Harmon) worked with her. The shop had originally been located further down the street at 143 Main. Mary and here sister-in-law, "Snooks" Davis, operated that shop, but when she moved up the street to this location, "Snooks" was no longer in the business. Later, Mary and her sister Ruby Davis King, opened a women's shop, the Davis Shop, that was rather exclusive for a small town. I shopped there some when I was a teen-ager and wanted something really special. I remember that Geraldine Merriman Watson and Betty Johnson McGregor were two of their salespersons. I was impressed by the way they dressed to go to work-high heels, jewelry, and attire that was the latest in fashion! When James McRae left Square Deal Drug Store across the street, he opened his own drug store at this location. I recall that Yates Brown, who had also worked at Square Deal, worked for him here. James later moved across the street to a larger building, which is where Savannah's is today. |
