Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Leland Rivers and Graydon Rivers built this building. According to Anne Macomson Rivers, Graydon's widow, "Bus" Brown, the manager at Belks' next door, bought the business. "Bus" and his wife Mozelle ran the dime store for several years before they moved to Hartsville. Anne doesn't recall that Mr. Brown was ever a Rivers partner. Selma Rae Rivers Henderson told me that the Browns rented a room from her in-laws until they could build a house. They built their first house on the entrance road to Ivy Hill, but later they re-built the old mill house on Thompson Creek near the present-day high school. As a child, I went down there with my parents to see the disaster when Thompson Creek overflowed and flooded their house. Another business that occupied this building before it became the location for Hairstyles by Jan was Impressions, a gift shop owned by Michelle Assef Martin. James W. Jenkins: Julian Watson operated a business at this location for a period of time. |
