Dr. William Perry: This was the site of Press Odom’s grocery store in the early 1900’s. It was also the site of Edgar Redfearn's feed and seed store. Later, Clinton Morris and Voyd Goodale were owners of the store. Today the Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Company operates from this location.
Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: My earliest recollection of this building was when Kimble Lisenby had the Chesterfield Dry Cleaners in it; that was where my family took our clothes to be cleaned. Tom Lisenby, Joel's father, ran the dry cleaning/laundry route; in those days they would pick up and deliver your clothes! Edgar Redfearn later moved his feed and seed business from a building down the street that is now part of Chesterfield Drug. The alley that was beside this store led all the way from Main Street to the backlots. It was an eyesore because at night people would hang around there and trash it. Edgar solved that problem by putting a gate at each end and using the alley for plants and other merchandise. When Edgar died, Clinton Morris, who had worked in the store for years, and Julian Watson bought the business. They later sold it to Voyd Goodale, and he sold it to Jimmy Freeman. After Jimmy closed the store, it was vacant for some time. Rachel Threadgill Miles Jackson now operates an agency for Woodmen of the World Insurance in the building. The alley is now a separate store building that is vacant at this time. It has been the office of the Chesterfield Advertiser, headquarters for loan companies, and a novelty shop in which the shop owner lived. |
