Dr. William Perry: A jewelry store here was owned by Martin's Jewelry of Cheraw and was operated by Jack Vernon (see below). Jack got frostbite during the war, and it created problems for him in later years. He had difficulty walking.
James W. Jenkins: During my teen years Jack helped me make several selections for prospective girlfriends (who will remain unnamed to protect the innocent). He always advised me to be frugal because a relationship might not work out. He knew a lot more about women at that time than I did. I wish I had taken his advice. Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: My engagement and wedding rings came from Martin's Jewelry at this location. Laura Burch Hunt worked here for many years with Jack Vernon. When I was in high school, senior girls could choose a silver pattern and receive a teaspoon in that pattern. I remember choosing "Old Master" by Towle. The last business I recall having been here was Hi-Tech Computers. Bill Freeman opened a computer store here, and later John E. Williams III became a partner. Later Williams opened his own computer store, first on East Boulevard and later on Park Drive. Today this building is vacant. |
