Doris Laney and Kindergarten Students at the Laney House Site

Daniel M. Laney House Site
Parking Area for First Citizens Bank

Dr. William Perry: This was the Daniel M. "Hamp" and Edna Barentine Laney house site. A greenhouse was located on the west side of the house to store plants for the winter. Dr. Laney was a pharmacist in town, and his daughter, Doris Laney, ran a nursery for pre-school children at this location. Dr. Laney had a drug store where J. D. Jones later had his drug store. When the Laney estate was settled, I purchased the property because it adjoined my mother’s property. This site and the original Buchanan land next to it were sold in 2000 to First Citizens Bank. A modern new bank was constructed on these two sites in 2003.

Katherine Ward Rivers Braswell: The Laneys had four children: Doris, Bert (a daughter), Dan, and Bill. The “Miss Doris Laney Kindergarten” was located on Main Street in Chesterfield in the home of her parents, Daniel "Hamp" and Edna Barentine Laney. Miss Laney was a former public school teacher. She opened the kindergarten in 1940 and operated it until her health declined.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: My two older children attended Miss Doris's kindergarten. She ran a tight ship and fed them wonderful homemade food. She held her commencement exercises in the sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church across the street for many years and then in her backyard. Doris's sister, Bert Laney (later Carroll), played the organ at St. Paul in the 40's. My husband, Charles W. Rivers, worked as an accountant for her brother, Dan Laney, in his accounting office upstairs over what is today Town Hall on Main Street.
