Twentieth Century Chesterfield was a period of time when the church played a major role in the life of the community and in the lives of individual citizens. In the early part of the century, the Bible was taught in the schools. The ministers from the various denominations rotated teaching Bible classes. Most churches had active youth groups and the young people from one church might participate in activities with another church. Easter Sunrise Services stands out in my mind as the few times when all citizens gathered together to worship. In my mind's eye, I can still hear the choirs from the Black Churches singing "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?" It still rings in my memory and I have never heard a more compelling rendition. |
