Beautification
Chesterfield has an active on-going
community beautification program. The Chesterfield Beautification
Committee and Chesterfield Tree Board provide leadership and
volunteer labor to beautify public properties throughout the Town.
The Town is in the process of completing a multi-phase
beautification project in the downtown area, Olde Towne Centre. Due
to its commitment to the community's trees and forests, the Town is
recognized as a Tree City, USA.

Commerce
As the centrally-located seat of Chesterfield
County, Chesterfield enjoys the status of a "hub" for the
surrounding rural area. The downtown area, Olde Towne Centre, is in
the mist of a multi-phase revitalization effort. Occupancy in
Olde Towne Centre consistently hovers near 100%. Other retail
businesses are concentrated on SC 9 and throughout the community.
While state and county government is the largest
employer in the community, several local industries provide
employment in the Town. Business and industrial sites are available
in the Town's 165-acre Chesterfield Commerce Park on SC 9.
Education
The Chesterfield area schools enjoy a
superb reputation for academic excellence which has been recognized
with numerous recognitions and awards. Chesterfield High School
boasts an average SAT Score that is above the national average.
Edwards Elementary serves students in grades CD-5, Chesterfield-Ruby
Middle School serves students in grades 6-8, and Chesterfield High
School serves students in grades 9-12. Additionally, the
Chesterfield County School District's alternative school, the
Palmetto Learning Center, and administrative offices are located in
Chesterfield.
Several colleges and universities are
located within easy driving distance from Chesterfield. These
include Northeastern Technical College which is located 10 miles
east of downtown on SC 9. Other area colleges and universities
include: Coker College, Frances Marion University, University of
South Carolina-Lancaster, Wingate University, and Winthrop
University.
Historic Preservation
The Town, founded in 1785 as the seat
of Chesterfield County, is home to two National Register Historic
Districts with buildings dating back to the late 1700s. Chesterfield
is recognized as a Certified Local Government by the National Parks
Service and is one of only four Preserve America communities in
South Carolina. A local design review commission approves all
exterior alterations, demolitions or new construction within the
Town's historic district.
Medical Care
A comprehensive community medical
clinic is operated by CareSouth Carolina in Chesterfield. An
optometric practice, two dentists and one chiropractor are also
located; in Chesterfield. Chesterfield General Hospital is located
10 miles east of the Town. The Town provides a municipal helipad for
medical evacuations at the Chesterfield Commerce Park on SC 9. As
the county seat, the Chesterfield County Health Department,
Chesterfield County Emergency Services and Hospice of Chesterfield
County are located in the Town. Within a 30-mile radius of
Chesterfield there are 336 practicing physicians, 101 dentists and
16 hospitals.
Parks and Recreation
The Town provides a comprehensive,
award-winning parks and recreation program. Beginning in January of
2006, the Town will partner with the new Chesterfield Family YMCA to
provide additional recreational offerings for the community. The
Town offers four park areas which include playgrounds, softball
fields, tennis courts, outdoor basketball court, and walking trails.
The town's walking trail system includes approximately one-half mile
of trails stretching from Main Street in the downtown area through
Craig Park and along wooded banks of Thompson Creek.
Green River Country Club located just
2 miles north of the Town offers a challenging 18-hole golf course.
Four additional courses are located within Chesterfield County.
The Sandhills State Forest and the
Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge encompass 96,000 acres
approximately 8 miles south of Chesterfield. These public lands
provide opportunities for camping, horseback riding, hiking,
fishing, hunting,wildlife observation and a nine mile paved

Being situated near the geographic
center of both Carolinas, many recreational opportunities abound
within short driving distances. The beautiful mountains of North
Carolina and the wide beaches of South Carolina's Myrtle Beach are
both easily accessible. Chesterfield is also located less than 50
miles from the outerbelt (I-485) of Charlotte, NC, one of the
nation's fastest growing cities. Numerous recreational offerings are
available in the Charlotte area - the NFL's Panthers, NBA's Bobcats,
Paramount's Carowinds theme park, the Charlotte Arena, Lowe's Motor
Speedway (NASCAR) and the Mint Museum.
Transportation
Chesterfield is located on SC
Highways 9, 102, and 145. I-20 is 54 miles south of the community,
I-95 60 miles southeast, and US 74 20 miles north. Charlotte's
outerbelt; I-485 is located 48 miles northwest of Chesterfield. The
nearest civil airport, Cheraw Municipal, is located 7 miles east of
the Town. The nearest commercial airports, Florence Regional and
Charlotte-Douglas International, are located 45 and 65 miles away
respectfully. The Port of Charleston is located approximately 150
miles from Chesterfield.
